Recycle Blogging Lesson Plan
Objective: To be involved in the process of creating or improving a recycling program within the school building.
Students will create a class Blog to discuss and formulate a recycling program in the school, and to seek assistance from other schools. Students will use Wordpress as instructed by the teacher to create their class blog. The blog will be monitored in class by the teacher and students.
Process: In class the teacher will set up a Wordpress Blog for students to work on together in the classroom only. Students will brainstorm how they would like to work on the blog. The class will then be broken into small groups for each group to be responsible to oversea each section, or topic, of the blog. Possible areas: Other schools Grade involvement (competitions) How the materials will be collected Research on benefits of recycling Reporting how the work and process is going
Students are expected to follow the following safety precautions: Never give personal information such as: Address Full Name Phone Number E-mail address Location of where they could be found on a given day or time
Students should never share their password. Students need to be cautious about what they post. Posts should always be appropriate and truthful. Think before you post, it will be online FOREVER. Never say anything that you don’t want EVERYONE to read, once it is posted it is out there FOREVER. If students come across inappropriate websites, they are expected to immediately close the website and report to the teacher. All comments received into the blog will be monitored by the teacher and shared if appropriate. In order to monitor the blog at school, the teacher will be the only one that has the password to access the dashboard on the blog.
Over the course of this semester our class will be starting a new venture into the world of blogging. After having such heated discussions in class about the lack of a recycling program in school, I thought it was time for us to take action. Together as a class we will strike out and formulate a plan for the school, and hopefully other schools, to get on the bandwagon and recycle. In class we will be creating our own blog. The will be your project, your ideas, your blood, sweat and tears.
Parents, this project is designed for your children to be proactive in the process of creating an authentic lesson. The blog will be monitored very closely in order to minimize any risk to your child. Having the school and other schools as an audience is key to the project. Our goal is to motivate and inspire others to share ideas and passion about recycling. I will personally be monitoring all posts, and comments, in order to ensure that no inappropriate material is posted. We will be using a generic school name in order to keep our identity safe.
Before beginning this project, parents please read over and discuss with your child the rules and expected behavior regarding blogging in class.
1. Students using blogs are expected to act safely by keeping personal information out of their posts. You agree to not post or give out your family name, password, user name, email address, home address, school name, city, country or other information that could help someone locate or contact you in person. You may share your interests, ideas, and preferences.
2. Students using blogs agree not to share their user name or password with anyone besides their teachers and parents. You agree to never log in as another student.
3. Students using blogs are expected to treat blogspaces as classroom spaces. Speech that is inappropriate for class is not appropriate for your blog. While we encourage you to engage in debate and conversation with other bloggers, we also expect that you will conduct yourself in a manner reflective of a representative of this school.
4. Student blogs are to be a forum for student expression. However, they are first and foremost a tool for learning, and as such will sometimes be constrained by the various requirements and rules of classroom teachers. Students are welcome to post on any school appropriate topic.
5. Student blogs are to be a vehicle for sharing student writing with real audiences. Most visitors to your blog who leave comments will leave respectful, helpful messages. All comments will be approved by the teacher.
6. Students using blogs take good care of the computers by not downloading or installing any software without permission, and not clicking on ads or competitions.
7. Students should be under teacher supervision at all times while accessing or posting on their blog.
8. Students who do not abide by these terms and conditions may lose their opportunity to take part in this project.

Permission Letter
Dear Students and Families of Room 115, I am so excited about a new technological journey that our 5th grade students experience this year! Every Friday, students will reflect upon their learning for the week by responding to a set of introspective questions. However, instead of writing their reflections in their Writer’s Notebooks, students will post their response to their very own blog on the Internet. Pretty cool, huh?
Form: What is it like? A blog is a type of web page that can be created and updated with ease. Blogs require the use of the Internet. Each entry has its own date and a comment section where visitors can share their thoughts with the author.
Function: How does it work? Introduction & Expectations: During these first weeks of school, I will model appropriate blogging and reflective practice with the class as I begin to set up their blogging spaces. This way the children will know exactly what is expected of them. Parent Permission: During Open House, I will share a sample iBlog page so you can see for yourself the power of reflective practice. The permission and contents of our iBlog Essential Agreement are attached here for your review. All iBlog permission slips & Essential Agreements will be collected during Open House. (*If you do not want your child to participate in the iBlog experience an alternate project will be assigned at Open House.)
Reflection: How do we know? Weekly Reflection: Every Friday morning, students will receive 3-5 questions asking them to reflect upon their learning experiences from the week. They will have at least one hour in class to create their iBlog post and comment one other student’s blog from the week before. If students need more time, they can complete that week’s iBlog reflection over the weekend (which will require Internet access). All posts must be completed by Monday morning.
Perspective? What are the points of view? Each week students will post a comment to at least one of their classmates’ iBlogs entries. I will also post a comment to the students’ iBlogs. Parents are welcome to participate in the conversation. Although people outside our class could potentially find our blogs, it’s unlikely because they will not have the address unless we give it to them. I will monitor students’ iBlogs and ask that you and your child do the same. When posting to iBlogs, student will have a code name to use. No real names, photos, or identifying information will be posted to the iBlogs!
Assessment Since the purpose of the iBlog experience is to generate more reflective IB students the students will be assessed on their progression (beginning, developing, secure). The iBlog Rubric is attached and will be discussed in more detail during the Open House.

Teach students how to protect their online identity and their online persona when using social media tools.
Technology Required
Internet connection with Web Browser for students to examine individual sites and assess how much information is shared at each site and the type /amount of information that is being shared is appropriate.
"The Way Back Machine" will be used to demonstrate the permanency of information online.
A class wiki will be used to build a repository of information related to this topic. Students will be asked to post links to articles related to internet safety, identity theft, the pros and cons of using social networking, and the responsible use of technology and web 2.0 tools.
Expected Student Behavior
Students will be responsible and active users in the course wiki.
Steps for Teaching
The topic of identity theft will first be presented followed by a brief discussion of the ramifications of identity theft.
The topic of representing oneself in a positive light will also be discussed. The type of information and amount of information that individuals post can not only depict the individual in poor light to future employers and college admissions boards but it can also help people steal one's identity.
Following the discussion, students will be placed in groups of three and each group will take responsibility for posting information about the topic that they were assigned (avoiding identity theft by being careful with the information that you post,.
At the end of two weeks, the groups use Prezi (or another Web 2.0) tool to present their findings to the class.
Required Action / Responses to Inappropriate Information
Students will be held accountable for the information posted to their wiki pages and will also be expected to contribute to the team.
Students will also be expected to cite the resources used to gather the information included in their page.
Even though the students are adults, they will be encouraged to let me know if they encounter any unsavory materials while completing this exam. If this should happen, I will talk to the student to find out more about the problem and will determine whether anything differently could have been done to prevent the student from accessing the materials.

In addition to including references to articles that you cite and ensuring that the information you include in your wiki is accurate, timely, and written by credible authors, you must use the wiki in a responsible way.
During this lesson, you will need to agree to the following terms:
I will not share my wikispace password with anyone. I realize that I am responsible for any content that is posted on the wiki with my account, even though I may have not done it myself.
I will respect the opinions of others and will abide by the college's student code of conduct as well as the internet guidelines while completing all of my interactions on the wiki and any other web 2.0 tool that is used.

Actions for Issues
Students who find comments written in either a negative manner from a small group individual or from an unknown person will notify the teacher immediately.
Students who misuse their internet privilege by logging onto other sites that are not Wordpress will have to submit future blog data in print form and handwrite responses for small group.
Any student who writes abusive or inappropriate content will have to submit future content in print form, approved by teacher before it is passed onto small group.
Teacher will work with students that abuse content a second time and will lose small group privilege. As well as Internet privilege.

You’re son/daughter is enrolled in Spanish I with Mrs. Chapman for the 2011-2012 school year. As part of the class participation, your student will participate in a Weblog, also known as a blog. A blog is an online website that allows students to post questions or responses to classroom questions from Mrs. Chapman. The purpose of our blogging will be to encourage communication in the target language. Students are encouraged to read and comment on classmates blogs. Parents may comment or reply to the posts as well. Our classroom blogs will be set to only allow replies to be posted once they have been approved by the student.
The blogs are online so it is possible that someone may stumble across a student’s blog. It is unlikely, but we have safeguards in place should this occur. Each student’s blog will have no personal information except their classroom Spanish name and the initial of their last name. Students will not be allowed to post real names, last names, phone numbers, addresses (including email addresses), school name, city, county, state, or anything else that could be used to track down a student. The students will be able to post about things they are interested in and voice their opinions, without sharing identifying information.
Students will be posting to their blogs 1-2 times per week. Students will be required to make some blog posts outside of the classroom. All that is required is a computer or handheld device with Internet access. If this is not available to students outside of school, they will be allowed access to the Library/Media Center during before and after school hours. Before students will be allowed to participate in the blogging project, they, along with their parents will need to read and sign the attached permission slip.

Third Grade Book Review Blog
Objective: Students will be able to post book reviews to the blog. Students will be able to comment on postings in an appropriate manner. Students will be able to identify inappropriate blog behavior and handle it following classroom procedure.
Technology: Students will be contributing book reviews to a classroom blog. Students will be reading these reviews and use the commenting feature to dialogue about the book. Students can contribute further information about the book or ask questions of the reviewer.
Behavior: Students will be expected to use correct grammar. Students will be respectful of their classmates when commenting. Appropriate school language must be used at all times. Procedure:
In the computer lab, the teacher will introduce students to the blog, explaining this is a new way for us to discuss books that we have read. Prior to the lesson the teacher will post several reviews for example.
The class will read the first posting, and discuss the important components for a book review. Several students will have the opportunity to post a comment to the review in front of the class.
The class will move on to the next review, which is missing several important components of a book review. Students will review the comments for the posting. ("You are stupid, you forgot the author's name." "You may want to double check your review, because you are missing some important information.") The students will discuss the comments and how helpful they would be to the reviewer. They will also discuss how they fit with our classroom rules.
For the final sample, the teacher will include an outsider comment that threatens students safety. ("I like this book too. Send an email to booklover@aol.com with your phone number so we can talk about the book.") The teacher will ask students what they think about this comment. During this step the teacher will state that students are to never give out personal information over the internet. The teacher will tell students that she will be consistently monitoring the blog, but if a student feels that there is problem it should be immediately reported.
The class will create a poster that reminds them to use constructive criticism, appropriate language, good grammar, and caution to any outside comments. Students will sign the poster as a contract.
For the remainder of the period, students will type their first review. Students will then be able to comment on reviews.
Teacher Actions: If a student fails to keep to the contract, the teacher will meet with the student one-on-one. The student will be reminded of the promise made and will be asked to rectify his mistake. If the student fails to follow the contract a second time, the student will lose internet privileges for a week. In the case of a safety concern, the student's parents will be notified. The teacher will reiterate the importance of good internet safety.

Dear Parents/Guardians, The third grade will begin using a classroom blog to review books. This is a web-based tool that can be used to collaborate and share information in and beyond the classroom. In an attempt to bring the 21st century into my classroom, we will be using this blog as a way to dialogue about literature. Students will have the opportunity to both share their own reviews, as well as comment on their classmates’ entries. Students will be required to post one complete review per week.
While these tools are designed to be helpful and safe, there is always potential for misuse. In preparation for this exciting endeavor, our class has created a poster to serve as a contract. Students are aware that their entries must include all of the same components of a book review that we have previously practiced on paper. We have discussed how to give constructive criticism when responding to our classmates. Students are also aware that any outside comments need to be brought to the teacher’s attention before approval. Students will only use their first names and will not publish any personal information within their reviews. As the teacher, I will be monitoring the blog daily. By following these guidelines, we are sure to have a safe learning experience.

Objectives: Students will develop an understanding of safety rules, responsibility and usage of blogging on the World Wide Web. Students will utilize their knowledge of the internet to determine if given scenarios are unsafe or misused on 10 blog examples. Explanation of how technology will be used: Student will compose a written blog on a private internet site, which they will post at least once a week. Students will show comprehension of their own emotions and how to control these emotions through a weekly written blog. Behaviors: Students will show compassion of others emotions and feelings, they will use discretion of their own lives leaving out names and important identifying information and they will use truth and honesty in their own blogs.
Procedure: 1. Students will discuss different emotions and how to rate their feelings on different occasions that they have experienced. 2. Students will discuss what a blog is and how blogs can be used in the classroom and personally. 3. Students will discuss appropriate uses of the internet and school policy for classroom usage. They will also discuss consequences for miss use of the technology source. 4. Students will be given 10 blog scenarios to read through and determine if the blog follows of the school policies and safety policies we just reviewed. 5. We will go over the worksheet as a class and discuss why a blog was safe and followed the rules and those they weren’t correct broke the rules. 6. Students will make their own blog on a free secure site. 7. Students will start by exploring the site and the abilities they will have on their new blog. 8. Their first post will be about themselves. 9. After their first blog, the students will be required to write on their blog once a week at their liking about what is going on in their lives, emotionally and physically and how this effects their lives in and out of school.
Steps I will take as the Teacher: Teacher will check the students posts daily and weekly to make sure they are posting and that posts are appropriate. I will also be walking around the room when blogging is being completed to check what they are working on. Students are to report any miss use they may find to the teacher verbally or in writing by the end of that school day. When miss use is determined, the student will not be able to continue their use of the internet for a period of time and will need to take the Acceptable Use test of the Internet again before returning to their blog.

Your student will be partaking in a weekly blog, where they will be journaling about their emotions and feelings. They will be using a secure blog site, where they will be placing their site on private and only members will be able to access their site. This lesson is to help your student learn appropriate ways to express themselves and to show empathy towards others. It will give them freedom to discuss areas that frustrate, upset, excite or happen in their daily lives past or present. Your student will also take part in the Acceptable Use Policy training, this training goes over safety and responsibility of technology use in the school setting. Objective: To be involved in the process of creating or improving a recycling program within the school building.
Students will create a class Blog to discuss and formulate a recycling program in the school, and to seek assistance from other schools.
Students will use Wordpress as instructed by the teacher to create their class blog. The blog will be monitored in class by the teacher and students.
Process:
In class the teacher will set up a Wordpress Blog for students to work on together in the classroom only. Students will brainstorm how they would like to work on the blog. After having such heated discussions in class about the lack of a recycling program in school, I thought it was time for us to take action. I am so excited about a new technological journey that our 5th grade students experience this year! Every Friday, students will reflect upon their learning for the week by responding to a set of introspective questions. However, instead of writing their reflections in their Writer’s Notebooks, students will post their response to their very own blog on the Internet. Pretty cool, huh?
Form: What is it like?
A blog is a type of web page that can be created and updated with ease. Blogs require the use of the Internet. Each entry has its own date and a comment section where visitors can share their thoughts with the author.
Function: How does it work?
Introduction & Expectations: During these first weeks of school, I will model appropriate blogging and reflective practice with the class as I begin to set up their blogging spaces. This way the children will know exactly what is expected of them.
Parent Permission: During Open House, I will share a sample iBlog page so you can see for yourself the power of reflective practice. The permission and contents of our iBlog Essential Agreement are attached here for your review. All iBlog permission slips & Essential Agreements will be collected during Open House. (*If you do not want your child to participate in the iBlog experience an alternate project will be assigned at Open House.)
Reflection: How do we know?
Weekly Reflection: Every Friday morning, students will receive 3-5 questions asking them to reflect upon their learning experiences from the week. They will have at least one hour in class to create their iBlog post and comment one other student’s blog from the week before. If students need more time, they can complete that week’s iBlog reflection over the weekend (which will require Internet access). All posts must be completed by Monday morning.
Perspective? What are the points of view?
Each week students will post a comment to at least one of their classmates’ iBlogs entries. I will also post a comment to the students’ iBlogs. Parents are welcome to participate in the conversation. Although people outside our class could potentially find our blogs, it’s unlikely because they will not have the address unless we give it to them. I will monitor students’ iBlogs and ask that you and your child do the same. When posting to iBlogs, student will have a code name to use. No real names, photos, or identifying information will be posted to the iBlogs!
Assessment
Since the purpose of the iBlog experience is to generate more reflective IB students the students will be assessed on their progression (beginning, developing, secure). The iBlog Rubric is attached and will be discussed in more detail during the Open House.

You’re son/daughter is enrolled in Spanish I with Mrs. Chapman for the 2011-2012 school year. As part of the class participation, your student will participate in a Weblog, also known as a blog. A blog is an online website that allows students to post questions or responses to classroom questions from Mrs. Chapman. The purpose of our blogging will be to encourage communication in the target language. Students are encouraged to read and comment on classmates blogs. Parents may comment or reply to the posts as well. Our classroom blogs will be set to only allow replies to be posted once they have been approved by the student.
The blogs are online so it is possible that someone may stumble across a student’s blog. It is unlikely, but we have safeguards in place should this occur. Each student’s blog will have no personal information except their classroom Spanish name and the initial of their last name. Students will not be allowed to post real names, last names, phone numbers, addresses (including email addresses), school name, city, county, state, or anything else that could be used to track down a student. The students will be able to post about things they are interested in and voice their opinions, without sharing identifying information.
Students will be posting to their blogs 1-2 times per week. Students will be required to make some blog posts outside of the classroom. All that is required is a computer or handheld device with Internet access. If this is not available to students outside of school, they will be allowed access to the Library/Media Center during before and after school hours.
Before students will be allowed to participate in the blogging project, they, along with their parents will need to read and sign the attached permission slip.

Third Grade Book Review BlogObjective: Students will be able to post book reviews to the blog. Students will be able to comment on postings in an appropriate manner. Students will be able to identify inappropriate blog behavior and handle it following classroom procedure.
Technology: Students will be contributing book reviews to a classroom blog. Students will be reading these reviews and use the commenting feature to dialogue about the book. Students can contribute further information about the book or ask questions of the reviewer.

In an attempt to bring the 21st century into my classroom, we will be using this blog as a way to dialogue about literature. While these tools are designed to be helpful and safe, there is always potential for misuse. In preparation for this exciting endeavor, our class has created a poster to serve as a contract. We have discussed how to give constructive criticism when responding to our classmates. When miss use is determined, the student will not be able to continue their use of the internet for a period of time and will need to take the Acceptable Use test of the Internet again before returning to their blog.

Dear Parents and Guardians,
Your student will be partaking in a weekly blog, where they will be journaling about their emotions and feelings. They will be using a secure blog site, where they will be placing their site on private and only members will be able to access their site. This lesson is to help your student learn appropriate ways to express themselves and to show empathy towards others. It will give them freedom to discuss areas that frustrate, upset, excite or happen in their daily lives past or present.
Your student will also take part in the Acceptable Use Policy training, this training goes over safety and responsibility of technology use in the school setting. Your child will not be able to participate with this lesson without passing the training first. I, as their teacher, will be checking their blogs daily/weekly to make sure there is no miss use during that time.

Class Wiki on Social Networking
Objective:

Procedure:
- Discuss with students the danger of social networking.
- Explain the risks of putting things online. Example: Tell the students that once they post or place a picture on their Facebook page it will be there forever.
- Explain to students the importance of not posting anything inappropriate and how it can affect future jobs or college acceptances.
- Assignment: I will divide the class into four groups. They will each add a page to the class wiki about social networking. They can add images and video to their wiki. They will share their wiki with the class. Each group will create a wiki page on one of the following topics:
o Advantages of Social Networking.o Dangers of Social Networking.
o Tips to stay safe when using social networking.
o How to prevent and avoid cyber bullying.

During the school year, Mrs. Keck’s class will be using a class wiki to display their work. A wiki is a place where students can collaborate as a group; add text, files, and images. Security
Students will not be using their full names. They are not allowed to post any personal information on the wiki. Nowhere on the wiki will our school name be mentioned.
Assessment
Students will be graded using a rubric. The rubric and assignment sheet will be displayed on the home page.

Prior to creating our class wiki, I request that you read over this letter with your son/daughter and agree to the following terms and conditions.
Wiki Terms and Conditions
1. The wiki will only be used for classroom purposes.
2. Students will not share their full name or any personal information about themselves.
3. The same rules that we use in the classroom will apply to their wiki. See class syllabus and school agenda.
4. Students will be respectful at all time and not use any negative words towards other classmates.
5. If students do not follow the terms and conditions, they will not be allowed to contribute to the class wiki and will receive a zero for the assignment.

Systems of Linear Equations
Objectives
Students will
· Discover the three methods to solving a system of equations.
· Solve application problems involving systems of equations.
Materials
· Glogster and Wiki account

· Online resources about systems of equations
Procedures
1. Have students research systems of equations.
2. When students have completed their research, ask them to summarize their findings on their glog.
3. Have students share their glogs with the class. Students will respond to at least two classmates through the discussion page on the class wiki.
Expectations of Students and Internet Safety
Students will be expected to follow all school technology procedures. Failure to follow procedures will result in loss of privilege to the technology. Prior to the activity we will address internet safety. Students will report any inappropriate content that is found during the project.
Evaluation
Use the following three-point rubric to evaluate students' work during this lesson.
· Three points: Students were highly engaged in class discussions; produced complete reports on their glogs; clearly demonstrated the ability to solve systems of equations.
· Two points: Students participated in class discussions; produced an adequate glog, including most of the requested information; satisfactorily demonstrated the ability to solve systems of equations.
· One point: Students participated minimally in class discussions; created an incomplete glog with little or none of the requested information; were not able to solve systems of equations.

Dear Parent,
As part of your student's Algebra I class, they will be participating in an activity that requires them to create a glog and utilize the class wiki. A glog is similar to a poster but will be created on glogster.com. Students will use the glog to explain their research on systems of linear equations. The class wiki is only accessible to students in the class. They will be making comments on each others' assignments. It is my hope that you will take this opportunity to discuss this project with your student.
According to Crestwood School District's Internet Policy, use of the Internet and computers are a privilege, not a right, and inappropriate use will result in withholding of that privilege. Each person who is granted access must have on file a signed acknowledgment form. The lesson will start with a class discussion based on digital citizenship. During the conversation the Nine Themes of Digital Citizenships.
Students will be using online resource pages, blogs, and rss feeds to continue and enhance their learning of the adobe products. Students will be required to write a daily journal entry relating to a new skill, process, or tip they read about each class period.
Description of what behavior is expected of students
Digital citizenship can be defined as the norms of appropriate, responsible behavior with regard to technology use.
Students are expected use online resources appropriately and responsibly.
Process or steps for teaching (i.e., what you will actually do in the classroom)
1. Ask the questions, “What is Digital Citizenship?”
2. Explain some different examples and scenarios.
3. Discuss with the class the importance’s of digital citizenship.
4. Next show students examples of websites they will be using for online resources, checking rss feeds, and social community blogs.
5. Demonstrate and explain how students are to keep their daily journal entry.
What actions you will take and how you expect your students to respond if they find inappropriate content
Students and parents need to realize that they will find inappropriate content. Both parties need to view this an educational experience where students are monitored by an instructor. Students will need to make mature, responsible decisions when they are on their own in college. These activities in class will hopefully prepare students for being on their own in a digital world.

There is the possibly that they may find inappropriate material during their research Students will need to make mature, responsible decisions when they are on their own in college.
